The cane is the most famous implement of traditional corporal punishment.
It was a well-known and loyal companion in the England of yore, attending to the bottoms of naughty children. But even today, canes are still used in some Asian and African countries as officially approved tools of justice .
The difference between skinned and unskinned canes is their degree of elasticity. Because they have no bark, skinned canes are more flexible and therefore have a more severe effect than their unskinned cousins.
Our canes are made from Manila cane, not to be confused with bamboo sticks, which tend to break and splinter. Manila cane is an organic product that naturally grows unevenly. Of course we reject canes which are too bendy, but a slight curve is typical of these canes.
